DEVIN TOWNSEND Begins Work On Second Ziltoid Record!
Devin Townsend has been talking about doing a second Ziltoid record for quite some time, but apparently it’s all coming to fruition now! So we all know that Devin’s been working on an album called Casualties of Cool that’s been talking about for a while, but now the man…
If you listen to Ziltoid backwards it’s an album about a guy who falls asleep and dreams of an alien who stops a war on Earth, vomits some fetid coffee and then goes home.
If you listen to Deconstruction backwards, it’s about a guy who is having a fight with the ghost of his past before moving on and running into a burger (which he just casually leaves behind) after which a giant ceremony involving Ziltoid ends with human beings changing their minds repeatedly about who they truly praise. This guy then hops on a train moving backwards out of hell while some dude named Juular becomes less angry sounding about what really ever bothered him, after which our protagonist ends up deciding to give up smoking, that, fucking, weeeeed in favour of soda water. Also, Joe Duplantier.
If you listen to Ocean Machine: Biomech backwards through your headphones and volume set all the way up, it’s about a heart attack-inducing shriek and then you can’t hear the rest of the album so who knows. RIP your eardrums.

I could go for a cup of coffee.

“Now, being hailed as the ultimate 4th dimensional guitar hero, Ziltoid feels confident in his complete victory.
But, Captain Spectacular has seen through Ziltoid’s façade and now sets out to expose Ziltoid for what he really is…a nerd.
A nerd…”

“So what the hell are you looking at, you ask yourself? There’s obviously a story behind this, so if you’d like to be less confused, the next few paragraphs are for you!
About a year ago, I moved in next door to my brother-in-law. He was for some reason delighted that his brother’s wife loves metal, and let me (read: forced me to) borrow The Human Equation by Ayreon. It was marvelous, I loved it, and right away, the singer playing the part of ‘Rage’ caught my attention. That was a growl I could get behind. So, after about 10 minutes of googling, I was previewing some of Devin Townsend’s newest album, Addicted, on iTunes. 5 minutes later I was buying the album. A little more googling and I saw this music video.
I think what really caught my attention about this album, and about Devin Townsend’s music in general, is his insane range. If growling is the only thing you’re good at, then I generally get tired of you pretty fast. No, Devin’s amazingly talented, and this album is fast paced and, well, different.
I bought a few more of his albums, and, again, fell in love with the very quirky Ziltoid the Omniscient—a concept album about an alien who comes to earth and demands for the perfect cup of coffee to be delivered to his ship in five Earth minutes, lest he destroy everyone.
So, this is the pretty lady (who’se voice in the video is Anneke Van Giersbergen) from the video for Bend It Like Bender! having a drink with Ziltoid. I’ve had this image in my brain for a little while, and while it didn’t turn out the way I thought it would, I’m pretty pleased with the results. Lots of fun on this one, and a big thank you to Devin Townsend for being my number one playlist while I work on comics.
Pencils+Photoshop. I erased most of the pencils, though.”
