This galaxy is so large, so fully-formed, astronomers say it shouldn’t exist at all. It’s called a “grand-design” spiral galaxy, and unlike most galaxies of its kind, this one is old. Like, really, really old. According to a new study conducted by researchers using NASA’s Hubble Telescope, it dates back roughly 10.7-billion years — and that makes it the most ancient spiral galaxy we’ve ever discovered.

“The vast majority of old galaxies look like train wrecks,” said UCLA astrophysicist Alice Shapley in a press release. “Our first thought was, why is this one so different, and so beautiful?”

I didn’t have internet connection yesterday, in other news a fucking meteor fell on Russia, and now apparently here (as my friend informed me in the morning) US radio stations are looking for people to translate stuff but I’m gonna sit quiet and guard my secret knowledge.

Okay, I will share this with you - it is not a piece of DA-14, a huge meteor that is supposed to fall close to Earth today and has been monitored for the last year.

My inner ufologist is all tingly and excited. After all, this happens approximately once in 1200 years, and the coincidence of it falling the day before DA-14 and only 3000 miles away from Tunguska’s is remarkable.
