The immortal bridge

No one really knows how these enormous rocks fell in this unusual place. Together they form a natural bridge spanning over a seemingly bottomless ravine. This so called “immortal bridge” can be found on Mount Tai in the Chinese province of Shangdong.

Grandidier’s Baobabs (Adansonia grandidieri) are, quite clearly, the mighty pillars that keep the sky from falling down.

These massive trees are found only in semi-arid regions of south-western Madagascar.

They can reach up to 100 ft tall! Almost all their height is devoted to a thick, columnar trunk that stores vast amounts of water during the rainy season. That way they don’t get thirsty during the rest of the year.

Which is good because they really need to keep their strength up. There’s a whole lot of sky up there. It must be heavy.

the silfra canyon of the mid atlantic ridge in iceland’s thingvellir national park has on one side the north american plate and on the other side the eurasian plate. the two plates are moving apart, widening the size of the atlantic ocean by about an inch a year. the water’s clarity, it bears noting, is the result of melted glacier water from langjoekull, which is filtered through underground lava rocks. The Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) in Istanbul is one of the largest covered markets in the world with 60 streets and 5,000 shops, and attracts between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily. It is well known for its jewellery, hand-painted ceramics, carpets, embroideries, spices and antique shops. Many of the stalls in the bazaar are grouped by type of goods, with special areas for leather, gold jewellery and the like. The bazaar has been an important trading centre since 1461 and its labyrinthine vaults feature two bedestens (domed buildings), the first of which was constructed between 1455 and 1461 by the order of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror.
