What is a great way to end a long-term volunteer work?

Travel. c”,)

So me and my backpack have been roughing it up over the past 4 weeks in Madagascar.  Went local (but still paid at times like a tourist!).  We’ve been regulars of all their means of public transportation — taxi-be (like marshrutkas), taxi-brousse (trucks that take passengers), real truck (that’s brimming with stuffs and animals, then filled with 50-60 people if space permits….what space?!), back of pick-up cars also filled with things and people, pirogue (a small boat operated by paddle and sail), and cart pulled by zebu.

Met wonderful people.  Saw wonderful and remote places. Experienced another country — its people and culture.  Learned a lot.

Fun.  Tiring.  Body (and pocket) aching.

Scans from “A Shameful Harvest”- National Geographic, September 1991

“Trapped in Ohio and illegaly trucked to South Carolina, these red foxes were purchased by a game farm for use as hunting quarry. Wildlife agents picked up the trail and arrested the violators, who were fined. Rabies and tapeworm tests required that the foxes be destroyed.”

I scanned these images for an assignment. This is the National Geographic issue from the month and year I was born.

Devin Townsend to Take Extended Break....A Four Day Weekend

“After the break, Townsend plans to ease back into things by recording approximately 36 more albums in 2013, before getting to work and putting out 623 discs in 2014.  He also reminded everyone that not one of those albums will feature a reunited STRAPPING YOUNG LAD.”

Hullo Tumblr! So I know I’m not the chattiest person on the internet, for which I do apologise (I’m just really not a terribly interesting individual), but I’m about to set off on one of my periodic long-distance rambles and was wondering if any of you might be able to help an itinerant illustrator out.

To give you some background; in addition to drawing daft little pictures, I also have a fondness for going on very long bicycle rides. Last summer, in the grip of some kind of quarter-life crisis, I set out from Oregon on my lonesome and somehow — after much cursing, falling over, getting lost and dodging rattlesnakes — made it to the Virginia coast. This summer I’m planning to head north from my home in New Orleans, traveling with my old art school buddy Amy. We’re going to make for Minneapolis, then hang a right and trundle through Wisconsin and Michigan, eventually winding up in Toronto. We might not make it all the way, but our hearts are bold and our sprockets are greasy, so we’re in with a chance.

We’re doing this on a pretty tight budget, which means we’ll mostly be bedding down in public parks, roadside picnic areas, RV parks and campgrounds. However! Since you Tumblr folks are such a nice bunch, I thought I might put this up here and see if anyone can help us out with accommodation while we’re on the road. Aside from anything else, it would be lovely to meet a few of y’all in person.

WHAT WE NEED:

- Somewhere to sleep. This could be the floor of your living room, patio, gazebo, nook, den, sunroom, basement, snuggery, library, man cave, garage, conservatory, yurt, barn, dungeon, dog kennel (providing the dog is amenable), or even just a patch of dirt on which we might pitch a couple of tents. We’re not fussy. We will be exhausted and filthy and hoping for death.

- Access to drinking water.

- That’s it! We truly don’t need anything else. No food, no bedding, nada. But if you fancy seeing two grown people dissolve into tears of abject gratitude, you could offer us the use of your shower.

WHAT YOU GET:

- The company of two expat Australians, one of whom is witty, charming and full of fascinating anecdotes, the other of whom is me.

- An original drawing of just about anything you like. I’ll probably post it to you after the trip, because I’m usually too knackered after a day of riding to do anything but eat peanut butter and stare into space.

- A copy of the Dime-a-Dance zine, when I finally get around to printing the dang thing, to be mailed along with your drawing.

- The assurance that we’ll be gone the next day, if you’re the kind of person who doesn’t like to be crowded (I feel ya).

- A detailed account of some of the more interesting roadkill we’ve encountered (optional).

- The satisfaction of knowing you helped a couple of crazy kids realise their dream of seeing the American Midwest at 8 white-knuckle miles per hour.

Here’s a little sketch map of our intended route:

… With apologies to anyone whose state boundaries I may have loused up.

You can contact me at ishkabibble.press@gmail.com. Thanks for reading, and have a marvelous day!

Reblogging since I’d love to help if only I lived in America, but maybe some of my followers can help instead!! Help Adoradora out they are a real great person and an incredible artist.
