Sang cephalopod uzur yang terbaring diam di ujung akuarium, entah apa yang ia pikirkan. Mungkin ia sedang tidur, atau sedang berpikir panjang, mengapa ia berada? Tatapan matanya tajam, seakan memberi sinyal jika ia harus memenuhi takdirnya, tapi entah apa takdirnya. Dia sendiri juga kebingungan, mengapa ia menempel di pojokan saja. Pucat. Lunglai. Mungkin dia hanya sedang melankolis.
Pendahulunya sudah wafat. Diawetkan sebagai sebuah spesimen di ruangan lain. Menjadi tontonan publik semenjak kematiannya pada 2014. Keduanya - si pendahulu dan sang perenung ini - adalah spesies yang sama, Enteroctopus dofleini; gurita pasifik utara. Dilihat dari waktu kematian sang pendahulu, waktu sang perenung dengan sembilan kesadaran ini tidak akan lama lagi. Ia akan menuju kenihilan. Pemberhentian abadi dengan ketidakpastian yang orang awam sebut dengan kematian.
Tak apa lah, gurita. Setidaknya umur pendekmu membuatmu tidak seperti manusia, yang terjebak dengan idenya sendiri. Memiliki jempol tidak semenarik memiliki ratusan pengisap.
Invertebrate high-five! 🐙 Octopuses feel, smell and taste the world around them through their suckers, while sea urchins use their tiny tube feet to move about the seafloor and pass food to their mouth.

Today the Department of Awesomely Good Deeds joins this little octopus in thanking filmmaker Pei Yan Heng, who spotted the small cephalopod after it had gotten beached during low tide on beach at Singapore’s Cyrene Reef. Pei filled a plastic cup with water, gently scooped up the stranded octopus, and then carefully returned him to the sea.
It took the creature a little while to recover, after which, instead of swimming away it swam over to Pei, extending a tentacle and placing it on Pei’s shoe, where it remained for a while in apparent gratitude:
