Brilliant and seemingly glowing, the bloodybelly comb jelly comes in different shades of red but always has a blood-red stomach. The sparkling display on the outside comes from light diffracting from tiny transparent, hair-like cilia. These beat continuously, propelling the jelly through the water. [X]
Jellyfish! My other favorite aquarium thing. I love moon jellies, but the little tiny mushroom guys were my favorite this time. Too tired to Photoshop out that glare on the glass, but maybe I’ll come back to it if I ever want to use these pictures for anything.
Spanish photographer Jordi Benitez Castells has Captured stunning detailed photos of Jellyfish just off the Spanish coast. The photos were taken about three metres below the surface using a Canon 7D. Jordi works full-time in a bank, but in his spare time climbs into his wetsuit goes diving.
We’re the only aquarium in the world culturing and exhibiting these two
species of deep-water hydrozoans, both of which are native to the Monterey Bay.
