Put away the garlic and wooden stakes, this is one vampire that doesn’t have much of a bite.
Neither a vampire nor a squid, the vampire squid, Vampyroteuthis infernalis, prefers to hang out in low-oxygen ocean zones such as the Monterey Submarine Canyon, rather than Transylvania, waiting patiently for its next meal. Despite their sinister appearance—and their scientific name, which means “vampire squid from hell”—these deep sea cephalopods are scavengers. Two sticky filaments float suspended in the water column to catch “marine snow,” a mixture of poop, dead organic material and mucus, that rains down from above—the perfect draculamari appetizer for these denizens of the deep.
“ – She’s carrying fertilized eggs. And now, happy and settled [in her new den], she lays them, 100,000 of them. Over the next six months, she carefully tends her precious brood. She caresses them with her arms, to keep them free of algae and properly supplied with oxygen. This is her first and only brood and so she takes great care of them. While she’s guarding her eggs, she doesn’t leave the den. Not once. Unable to feed, she is starving. Her last act of devotion is to blow water over the eggs to help them hatch. Young, fully-developed octopus pop out. Though only a few will survive to adulthood, she’s given them the best chance she can. After her long and lonely vigil, she is dead. Surely this sacrifice must make her one of nature’s most devoted mothers.”
At the Davidson Seamount off the coast of Monterey, California, the exploration vessel Nautilus found, for the first time, a breeding colony of 1,000 rare deep-sea octopuses.
How does an octopus breathe? Where are its organs? And what’s this about a siphon?
Find out from intrepid cephalopod aquarist Candace about the general body plan of a giant Pacific octopus and what provides the cephalopower to all that inkredible octopus behavior.
what is it about capybaras that attracts groups of small animals to them?
Its not just mammals either its like birds and turtles and frogs too
look at this shit
They radiate peace
capybaras are friend shaped
I love this post
This is actually a cool thing I know about!
In the wild capybaras live in large groups so naturally a female capybara will take care of not only her own offspring, but all of the other offspring in the group. So capybaras are super great mothers who will adopt pretty much anything and take care of it.
Lots of places that rescue different animals will give a group of baby animals to a capybara to raise if they have one.
Like puppies
Ducks
Deer
Emus
They are just super calm animals so they’re naturally great at mothering or just existing in a group!
