Octavio was playing with this clear barrel he was given for enrichment. It had food in it hours before this video was taken, which he ate. So that means he is just chilling in it because he wants to. He would also slightly lift it up every once in a while.

…(even if patient shows no overt signs of pain since many non-domestic species become docile when painful), provide analgesia. No wildlife (unless hand-raised) is “tame” or “grateful for being rescued” - these signs may be interpreted as neurological trauma, fear, debility, extremes of age, or possibly normal predator avoidance behavior.

Mimic Octopus

theandamanlangkawi:

Diving off the coasts of Malaysia and Indonesia, I have encountered an octopus that looks like a sea snake. Since its discovery in 1998 researchers have learned much more about this unusual animal that tries to look like other more dangerous species.

image

The mimic octopus is about 60 cm from arm tip to arm tip and can copy the color and shape of some of S.E. Asia’s deadly marine life. Researchers have found that the Mimic can copy at least 15 different animals including sea snakes, lionfish, flatfish, brittle stars, crabs, sea shells, stingrays, flounders, jellyfish, sea anemones, and mantis shrimp

Octopuses are very intelligent animals and most can make themselves resemble their surroundings. The Mimic octopus is the only species known that seems to understand what the best defense is for its circumstances.

image

A great example of these clever defenses occurs when a Mimic is being bothered by demoiselle fish. The Mimic will bury six of its arms into the mud and color the other two in sea snake bands. Sea snakes are predators of demoiselle fish and the deadly disguise frightens them away.

Not all of the disguises are defensive. Being a mimic can also be a help when you are hungry. By changing its appearance to look like a crab the Mimic is able to get close enough to real crabs to catch and kill them before being discovered.

It’s clear that Giant Pacific Octopus is smart- Webster recalls a time she was feeding Cordelia, an octopus whose name means “daughter of the sea,” while giving a behind-the-scenes tour. “I went down to grab another piece of food, and there wasn’t any left,” she says. “She had it in her arms. She had figured out where I kept her bin, and she had reached in, grabbed it and pulled it back out. They’re very smart, very intelligent creatures, so I had to learn to move the bin around.” 📝: @nationalaquarium

“Bro… wtf?” [full video]

I had no idea baby lumpsucker fish are this cute. They’re also just a really cool group of fish. I’m going to let Scientific American’s beautiful phrasing stand for itself about these little guys:

“Available for birthday parties, weddings and corporate functions in the Under the Sea region, the lumpsucker is a chubby, almost-spherical fish with modified pelvic fins that have evolved into adhesive discs on their undersides. So literally lumps with suckers. (…)  Other than looking like swollen eyeballs… with eyeballs… lumpsuckers have some pretty strange things going on. For one, they’re pretty awful swimmers, thanks to their round bodies and tiny fins, and when disturbed they tend to flap around aimlessly in different directions. Which is not how escape generally happens. As newly hatched larvae they are surprisingly well developed, equipped with a fully functional mouth and well-developed digestive system. This allows them to begin feeding on tiny crustaceans and fish just 10 days after hatching. Sometimes they’ll resort to eating each other because nature.”
