CAUTION: HERE BE A RANT
When I heard that Oddworld Inhabitants and Just Add Water had joined together to make a new Oddworld game, this is not what I expected. A remake of the first game never fucking crossed my mind. I am so disappointed by hearing this. Seriously. You had a whole quintology of games planned, and of those FIVE planned games, we have gotten two. You also had quite a few spinoffs/stand alone titles that sounded fucking awesome, but you decide to remake Abe’s Oddysee as your first new project? That is a god-damned mother fucking letdown Oddworld Inhabitants. Why, instead of trying to fix something that is not broken, would you not make Squeek’s Oddysee, or The Brutal Ballad of Fangus Klot? Why? I mean give me a decent reason and maybe I will understand, but oh my god I this is such a disappointment.
After the remakes the other games will be made. No need to get angry.
^ That, plus- I think OWI is aware that after that xbox exclusive deal they will need to build up a name for themselves in the industry again, so they probably want to “return” with what is widely considered to be their best game. It’s a safe route because many people who are already familiar with the franchise will buy it for its nostalgic value (I know I will be in that group; Oddworld was a huge part of my childhood) but it’s also an opportunity to introduce a new generation of gamers to it and possibly gain a new fanbase. As a long-term fan, I’d like to get a completely new game, of course, but I also understand OWI’s decision. The remake looks great from what we’ve seen so far, and I’m positive they will add some new things they previously couldn’t, also, working with “old” material allows them to focus on gameplay and other technical aspects of the product; they surely will use that experience when working on new games.
Sure, but a re-make of the first game is gonna be painfully short. It would have been a lot cooler if they had put Oddysee and Exodus together to make the new game.
Really? I don’t know, I remember Oddysee to be of a decent lenght (and it was certainly more difficult to beat with a decent karma than Exoddus, in my opinion). Like I’ve said, I’d treat it like an experiment with a new engine more than anything and a way to introduce Oddworld to a wider audience. I’m just happy that OWI is finally back, and hope it won’t be long until they announce a new title :)
