Ok, recently got back into the somewhat obscure Legacy of Kain series, and something’s bugging me. With all the time travelling shenanigans that go on in this series, did it never occur to anyone to go back and stop Ariel from being killed?

All the shit that happened was because she was murdered, Nupraptor went nuts because of it and poisoned the rest of the circle. So use your shiny time machine to go stop that or at least get the remaining eight into counselling. Then work on replacing the circle with vamps, as per original plans, but without corrupting everybody, or creating enough time paradoxes to make a god cry.

Thoughts?

Yeah, and when you’re at it just stop the whole Hylden vs. Ancients war before the latter get hit over the face with bloodthirst/immortality combo curse which causes the Elder God to sulk and never speak to them again, which in turn makes the Ancients baaw and commit mass suicide, and only Janos is left with the resposibility to find new Guardians who would babysit the Pillars.

Seriously though, my memory of LoK’s plot is kind of rusty, but didn’t the whole “corruption of the Circle” (caused by Nupraptor’s insanity resulting from Ariel’s death) end up to be of no consequence in the end? I mean, it was stated in Defiance (I think?) that even if Kain decided to sacrifice himself at the end of Blood Omen, it still wouldn’t stop the corruption and the Pillars would fall and release the Hylden at one point or another anyway? At the end of Defiance, the Elder God is revealed to be the one manipulating everyone else (both sides of the conflict, actually), and in Soul Reaver 2 he is shown clutching at the already cracked Pillars with his tentacles (even Raziel observes that the more corrupted the Pillars get, the bigger the Elder grows)…Kain does call him “false god” at one point, so maybe it would be more effective to go back in time and destroy the Elder before he grows into the huge Lovecraftian lump of eyes and tentacles and gets his own cult following among the ancient vampires.

But idk, I probably remember a ton of things wrong; sorry in advance!

Well, if I remember well, Moebius was the one who created the Time Machine.

And, if you remember well, he was the servant of the Elder God. Also, the Time Machine has portals to go to different times of Nosgoth. Sure at the end of Soul Reaver, Kain manipulate the mechanisms to go to a concrete time (when Moebius is leading the vampire Hunters using the Saraphan’s fort). But still was the wizard who created the machine, if I’m not mistaken. Also, in Soul Reaver 2, the portals you find to travel along the time are fixed to a concrete time.

My theory? Moebius of course followed the instructions of the Elder God, he created all the paradox to lead Raziel and Kain to only one end. That’s mean that, even if Kain or Raziel wanted, they probably wouldn’t be able to travel sooo far away to stop the war between the Ancients and the Hylden. And they can’t stop the murder of Ariel because they need her ghost to sacrifice herself so Raziel can have the last form of the Soul Reaver, the only way to give Kain enough power to damage and kill the Elder God. Maybe even if he were weaker they maybe could still need the Soul Reaver in all their potential. Also, the Reaver was created by the Ancients.

So at one point they can’t change the important facts which leaded Nosgoth to his destruction precisely because they need them to occur to have the ultimate weapon to destroy the origin of it, the Elder God.

I don’t know if I explained myself, and probably I miss another important factors because I didn’t play in years, and my memories aren’t fresh about the game. Damn, I even was remembering more things as well as I was writing this. But I hope everybody have my point.

Oooh, oh yeah! I was supposed to mention that Ariel’s death was necessary because otherwise they wouldn’t be able to forge the Spirit Reaver, but I forgot…you managed to put it all down better haha!

And yes, Moebius created the chronoplast chamber and he seems to be the only one who can operate it. Raziel sure as hell cannot. However, throughout Soul Reaver and Soul Reaver 2, Kain apparently uses the chamber as well and he manages to end up exactly where he wants, even if he has no business to be there (like in the “future” of Nosgoth in SR2). It could be part of Moebius’ plan, since Moebius supposedly knows everyone’s move before they even make it…but I just don’t know, Kain’s competence in operating the chronoplast chamber is never really explained in the games (or I just don’t remember that :D).

But anyway, yeah, you’re right; without the Spirit Reaver Kain wouldn’t have any chance against the Elder God - not only because he cannot be harmed with any physical weapon, but also because without Raziel’s spirit inside the blade Kain couldn’t even see the Elder. And since Elder was exposed as the big bad behind everything, I think that all events that took place were necessary.
